K|ngp|n getting close to 2.2GHz on EVGA GTX 980 Classified

by on02 October 2014

Custom PCB makes it quite an overclocker

According to a screenshot posted by EVGA, Vince "K|ngp|n" Lucido is closing in on the 2.2GHz mark with the EVGA Geforce GTX 980 Classified graphics card. This obviously points to impressive overclocking potential and we are definitely looking forward to check out what EVGA did to the PCB and to see how far can K|ngp|n can actually push that card with LN2 cooling.

Nvidia's GM204 Maxwell based GTX 980 has already managed to break the 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme world record. It actually broke the record twice in the same day, as both K|ngp|n and Elmor have been doing some overclocking sessions yesterday. While Elmor still holds the world record on HWBOT.org with its ASUS GTX 980 DirectCU II graphics card and 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme score of 9568 marks, we now have a screenshot which shows that Vince "K|ngp|n" Lucido managed to push the EVGA GTX 980 Classified to a rather impressive 2168MHz for the GPU and 2203MHz for the memory, which pushed the 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme score up to a rather impressive 9617 marks, score that has been validated by Futuremark's 3DMark Hall of Fame.

Hopefully, Vince "K|ngp|n" Lucido is still overclocking and tuning that same graphics card and we will see some even higher frequencies quite soon. We also hope that we will be able to get our hands on EVGA's GTX 980 Classified in our review lab and check out how good that same graphics card is for an average consumer.
